  15. PURPOSE
  16.  
  17. The purpose of the IGA_Net(tm) File Distribution System message echo
  18. is to provide a forum for discussing genealogical filing systems
  19. and to announce the availability or the upcoming dissemination of
  20. files in general to genealogists; family researchers; and family
  21. historians within the network, including, but not limited to:
  22.  
  23.   1.  Genealogy, Telecommunications, Utility, Data Collection,
  24.       Hardware Maintenance, Network Maintenance, Reporting,
  25.       Analytical, and Documentation software
  26.  
  27.   2.  Data storage and retrieval techniques for general research
  28.       information of interest to genealogists, such as cemetery
  29.       and library records, and the records of religious, family
  30.       oriented fraternal organizations (genealogy associations
  31.       and others), and personal filing techniques
  32.  
  33.   3.  Security of filing systems
  34.  
  35.   4.  Promoting assistance to others in their research efforts
  36.       through the use of filing systems, text files, software,
  37.       documentation, and helpful hints for solving common types
  38.       of problems and suggesting possible solutions to queries
  39.  
  40.   5.  Assisting network affiliated individuals and others with
  41.       the availability, location, and restrictions on specific
  42.       software, text, documentation, and research tools
  43.  
  44.   6.  Providing a forum for the discussion of standardization
  45.       of file structures and file associated software (e.g. -
  46.       tafel associated system standards)
  47.  
  48.   7.  Discussing techniques for manipulating genealogical files
  49.       for enhanced access and availability of existing records
  50.

  52. Considering that characters with the high-ASCII bit set
  53. (above 7A hexadecimal (127 decimal)) and characters of value
  54. less than 20 hexadecimal (32 decimal) cause numerous problems
  55. with software now in use, such characters are not allowed
  56. in messages in this echo.

  59. NETWORK SPECIFIC RULES
  60.  
  61. Messages in this echo must conform with current rules in place
  62. for the IGA_Net(tm).  There are standard rules in IGA_Net(tm) whereby
  63. messages containing inflammatory information (flames), personal
  64. information, personal attacks, and deliberate lack of topic
  65. (e.g. - For Sale in this echo), any of which may be construed
  66. as annoying to one or more individuals will result in serious
  67. consideration for or actual removal of the source node from the
  68. IGA_Net(tm) nodelist.  This echo will be monitored by the IGA_FDS
  69. moderator.

  71. Messages should be in English if possible, but there is no
  72. general restriction on language.
  73.  
  74. INTERNATIONAL MESSAGES
  75.  
  76. This is a worldwide echo in an international genealogy-only
  77. network.  As such, message echoes may be about genealogical
  78. matters in any country in the world.  Note that this is a
  79. file distribution system echo and messages should concern the
  80. resources we use, not general research.  A IGA_GENEALOGY echo
  81. is in place for research queries and information for or about
  82. individuals.

  84. MAKING CONTACT WITH OTHERS REGARDING FILES
  85.  
  86. This echo is established to permit anyone to query All or
  87. any individual about the location or availability of types of
  88. files or software.  The moderators promote discussions about
  89. files within IGA_Net.
  90.  
  91. GENEALOGY SOFTWARE DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM
  92.  
  93. This system is mentioned in passing.  IGA-FDS has no ties to or
  94. links with GSDS.  This echo and related file transfer mechanisms
  95. are meant to handle IGA-FDS file structure traffic only, and not
  96. FidoNet's GSDS.  There is the possibility that a file or software
  97. component may enter the GSDS / IGA-FDS transfer streams about the
  98. same time.  There remains no link to GSDS if that should occur.
  99. IGA_Net-NA has not requested nor have they received permission to
  100. gate GSDS into IGA_Net(tm).  Again, consider the files related to
  101. IGA-FDS to be IGA_Net unique, not necessarily readily available to
  102. those parties within FidoNet or any other network/mailing system.

  104. DISCLAIMER ON FILE REPORTING SYSTEMS
  105.  
  106. Software used by nodes within the IGA_Net(tm) to transfer files and
  107. to report on the availability of files may not generally restrict
  108. reports on a given zone or network.  As an example, a system on
  109. IGA_Net(tm) may report zone 440 file traffic, but may also report on
  110. traffic within another network on the reporting system (e.g. -
  111. receipt of another network's nodelist).  All efforts will be
  112. made by hatching nodes to limit the amount of non-IGA_Net file
  113. reporting traffic, but it is understood that other network data
  114. regarding file traffic may be portrayed on IGA_FDS reports
  115. inadvertently.
  116.  
  117. COMMERICIALISM AND COMMERCIAL ADVERTISING
  118.  
  119. IGA_Net(tm) neither expressly forbids nor promotes commercialism or
  120. commercial advertising, but certainly promotes the idea that such
  121. materials should be brief and one-time.  General announcements
  122. regarding file and software products such as computer programs
  123. that form the foundation of this echo are permitted.  Discussion,
  124. comparison and review of such products, provided they have a
  125. genealogical application, is encouraged.

  127. ETIQUETTE
  128.  
  129. This echo is supported by an amateur network.  Users of the echo
  130. should show consideration for SysOps who very often spend their
  131. own money to move messages around the world.  Try to avoid wasting
  132. space.  Do not indent left margins, quote too much of a message in
  133. reply, or use unnecessarily big taglines. Informative taglines or
  134. signature lines, giving the names of families you are interested
  135. in, are permitted.

  137. TAGLINES
  138.  
  139. The use of taglines is strongly dissuaded. In the event the originator
  140. of a message finds he/she has an urgent need to utilize a tagline, the
  141. tagline will only be a short line detailing research surnames:

  143.                  Researching: JONES, GREEN, and CALLAWAY
  144.  
  145. Cutesy taglines add nothing to the value of genealogical research
  146. being conducted by the message originator.... in fact, they detract
  147. greatly from the serious purpose of the message content.
  148.  
  149. Also, taglines add to the length of messages and therefore add to the
  150. cost of transferring traffic via continental and intercontinental
  151. telephone. Again, you are requested to empathize with those who are
  152. paying the long-distance charges and leave taglines off your messages.
